Ian Trim is a director in the global Energy practice. He leads Navigant's work on low carbon energy strategies, and working with governments and corporate clients to develop long term scenarios that help them understand the risks and opportunities that the transition to a low carbon economy could bring to their operations.

Ian has extensive experience in developing policy solutions both for the UK and internationally through 10 years spent with the UK’s Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO). Most recently Ian headed up DECC’s Global Carbon Markets team acting as the UK’s lead negotiator on carbon markets at the Paris COP, helping to design the future framework for global carbon markets. Ian helped to develop the UK’s energy efficiency policy framework, assessing potential policy solutions for both industry, small businesses, and residential properties. He helped design the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme, an innovative cap and trade scheme designed to drive energy efficiency in large, non-energy intensive industry, and led a team exploring policy solutions to overcome the barriers preventing small businesses taking up energy efficiency measures.

He has been part of the International Civil Aviation Organization’s working group developing the new market-based measure for aviation and led the UK’s input into the linking negotiations between the EU ETS and the Swiss ETS. Ian has played an active part in the World Bank’s Carbon Pricing Leadership Coalition, Partnership for Market Readiness, and Carbon Initiative for Development. From 2011 to 2014, Ian worked for the FCO as the UK’s lead in Russia on climate and environment issues, running projects, and engaging Russian ministries and businesses on low carbon and energy efficiency issues. Earlier in his career, Ian worked in business consulting, specializing in supply chain management, and for large pharmaceutical and automotive companies.

MSc. (with distinction) in Environmental Technology from Imperial College London and business degrees from Groupe ESC Bordeaux and Portsmouth University
