Kevin C. “Casey” Nolan is a Managing Director and leads the Healthcare Provider Strategic Planning practice. With more than 35 years of strategic planning experience, he has conducted more than 500 consulting engagements for integrated delivery systems, university medical centers, multi-hospital systems, community hospitals, physician groups, long-term care providers, home health agencies, specialty facilities, and healthcare manufacturers and suppliers nationwide. Casey has also assisted a variety of international clients located in Europe, South America, and the Middle East.
Casey’s specific functional areas of experience include strategic planning, program development, partnering strategies, mergers and acquisitions, integrated delivery network development, physician network development, medical staff planning, physician-hospital integration, market analysis and research, product development and positioning, community needs assessment, organization development/structure, governance, demand analysis/projection, feasibility assessments, facility planning and development.
Select project experience includes:
- Developed and helped implement strategic direction for newly formed regional integrated delivery network that articulated the organization’s mission, vision, and values and identified seven local area goals along with specific initiatives for achieving profitable growth, improving efficiency, and leveraging human and financial capital. The system achieved revenue improvements and cost savings of more than $40 million in its first two years of operation.
- Assisted more than 20 healthcare organizations with their strategic affiliation/partner assessment processes, including evaluating their need for a strategic partner, delineation of the strategic drivers for an affiliation, identified and evaluated potential partners, facilitated selection of a partner, assisted in structuring the partnership, developed integration “roadmap,” and prepared business plan for the partnership
- Developed service line program plans for an academic medical center that defined new centers of excellence, identified additional program and service components, specified physician complement and distribution, developed referral channels, expanded access points, determined facility requirements, assessed operational implications, and produced financial forecasts. Plans identified more than $17 million in new revenue.
- Assisted a nationally recognized regional integrated delivery network in the formation of a physician network designed to increase market presence and penetration through placement of targeted physician resources in strategic locations throughout the 18-county service area. Scope of assistance included organizational design, governance structure development, physician complement and distribution strategy, and ancillary service capability determination.
Casey is an Associate Professor at Johns Hopkins University and recently co-authored Strategic Planning in Health Care: A Guide for Board Members. He also serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the American Trauma Society.
