Derek Jones is a director with Navigant’s Energy practice. He has more than 10 years of experience in distributed energy resource technology evaluation, program, and policy planning.
Prior to joining Navigant, Derek worked for Pacific Gas & Electric Company in San Francisco where he served as the statewide research planning lead for zero net energy (ZNE) and codes and standards, and as the PG&E lead for CSI research. In these roles, he led collaborations among staff from the California Investor Owned Utilities (IOU), the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), and the California Energy Commission (CEC) to produce strategic research road maps. While at Pacific Gas & Electric Co. (PG&E), Derek managed the development of regulatory compliance reports estimating load impacts and adoption forecasts for solar PV and electric vehicle (EV) technologies. In particular, he led completion of the 2013 and 2014 Joint IOU EV Load Research Reports for the California IOUs. The reports provided load impacts from the IOU’s respective EV rate schedules, EV penetration forecasts, and cost tracking for distribution and service upgrades associated with new EV loads. The studies were filed with the CPUC in the Alternative Fuel Vehicle proceeding (R.13-11-007). In addition, Derek served as the statewide research planning lead for zero net energy and codes and standards programs, and as the PG&E lead for California Solar Initiative (CSI) research.
