Kathleen Anderson, BSN, MHA is an associate director in the performance excellence practice with more than 25 years of healthcare experience. She works with clients to improve clinical operation effectiveness across the healthcare continuum. Kathleen has experience in analyzing and implementing improvements in the clinical model of care across inpatient and outpatient settings and in the planning, assessment and implementation strategies to improve clinical processes, clinical outcomes and efficiency.

Kathleen has extensive experience overseeing large implementation engagements focusing on case management, improvement of patient access to care, scheduling standardization and centralization, quality and patient satisfaction improvement, patient throughput and care variation management. Additionally, she has deep experience in large healthcare systems in both academic medical center environments and children’s hospitals.

Areas of Expertise

  • Case Management: Evaluate, design and implement the appropriate case management model for key processes such as length-of-stay management; integration of care provision between case managers in the full continuum; application of clinical guidelines for admission; management of avoidable days and denials; and the process to manage discharge placement into the community. Identify key priorities for the design and implementation of a care management model that supports the transition to value-based care.
  • Patient Throughput/Bed Management: Address capacity to improve continuity of care and appropriate bed aggregation by service lines to effectively deliver appropriate care to the right patient at the right time in the right venue. Ensure effective patient placements processes are in place. Develop dashboard to measure and monitor key metrics.
  • Care Variation Management: Implement operational and clinical evidence based practices to improve operational excellence, improve quality outcomes, and patient and staff satisfaction through a focus on reducing variation in care within targeted clinical services areas.
  • Professional Experience Case Management: Directed the implementation of a comprehensive clinical operations project for a seven-hospital healthcare care system whose scope included case management, patient placement/bed management, interdisciplinary rounds and the implementation of a reporting dashboard. $4.8M in recurring annualized savings achieved.
  • Patient Throughput/Bed Management: Led the redesign of a large academic medical center’s patient placement model which included developing and implementing a patient flow management center and enhancing staff roles and responsibilities. Over 3,000 patient days saved to reduce LOS and increase available capacity.
  • Care Variation Management: Managed the implementation of a comprehensive clinical operations program for a three hospital communicate healthcare system that included a clinical model of care redesign, new standards of care for targeted DRGs, and a new surgical/OR governance structure. Results included a 3% overall reduction in LOS and $2.1M in recurring labor savings.
