Navigant Center for Healthcare Research and Policy Analysis Pulse Alert: HHS Offers Proposed Changes to Medicare Accountable Care Organizations, Seeks Comment

HHS Guidance

Yesterday, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced proposed changes to the Medicare Shared Savings Program (aka Medicare Accountable Care Organizations) two months after announcing mixed first-year results: last year, 85 of the 114 Medicare ACOs did not generate shared savings; in the first two years of the program, 351 MSSP ACOs were started, with only one in five showing savings.

The proposed changes are intended to make implementation easier for struggling ACOs and enhance rewards for those already showing positive results.

HHS requests written feedback on the proposed changes and input on additional reforms by February 6, 2015.
