Areas of Expertise

John Boland is a Managing Director for Navigant Healthcare Cymetrix, a subsidiary, and part of the Healthcare practice. He is the leader of Physician Business Process Management specializing in physician coding, billing and collections. With more than 25 years of healthcare experience, he excels at revenue cycle management, practice assessment, and operations. John delivers innovative solutions, such as powerful analytics, custom reporting, benchmarking, and tracking, to help physicians and physician organizations maximize their overall financial performance.

Billing processes are becoming increasingly complex in today’s evolving reimbursement environment, causing collections to fall behind and charges to become more difficult to collect. John has collaborated with many large health systems and independent physician groups across the country to design and implement solutions focusing on process and business function as the building blocks for world-class financial performance, involving billing and collections, claim coding, provider credentialing, outsourcing, and operations improvement.

Together with his team, John excels in increasing monthly and annual cash flow totals, decreasing days in accounts receivable, and increasing the payment per unit of service (RVU and wRVU). He has worked with many independent multispecialty and specialty physician organizations typically ranging in size from 5 to 350 providers—all exhibiting better financial results with improved billing and collections services. A physician organization can expect to improve its financial position by at least 10% using these valuable services.

Representative experience includes:

  • National healthcare services organization: redesign of the revenue cycle process, deployment of supporting technology, and the development of compliance infrastructure
  • Large national health system: assessment of local physician organizations and process improvement design to standardize services to both employed physicians and the patients they serve
  • National physician organization: 4-region assessment of management services to standardize deliverables and drive consistent economic performance throughout the regions
  • Large multi-specialty physician organization (~1,000 providers): evaluation of billing and collections with significant improvements made in Days in A/R, Aged A/R over 120 days, and improved payment per wRVU
