Supporting Industrial Energy Transition in Germany

Ecofys, a Navigant company, is working with the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs to decarbonize its industrial sectors

Ecofys, a Navigant company, is supporting the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs to facilitate the industrial energy transition. Taking into account national energy, climate, and industrial policy goals, the energy experts are leading a consortium to close crucial knowledge gaps on the interaction between industrial growth and the development of energy supply systems. To meet its ambitious climate targets, Germany needs to decarbonize its industrial sectors, especially the energy-intensive sectors such as chemicals or metals.

Ecofys modeled and described transition pathways for the eight industries that are particularly relevant to the German economy’s transition toward the 2050 decarbonization target. The pathways and analysis put a strong focus on future competitiveness. Each transition pathway comprises a set of sector-specific, transformational decarbonization measures including enabling policy recommendations. At the same time, Ecofys power market experts are analyzing the impact of those transition pathways on the energy system and, as a result, putting forward energy market design amendments to support the decarbonization of Germany’s industrial sectors.
