International Comparison of Fossil Power Generation Efficiencies

Navigant compared the power generating efficiency and CO2-intensity of fossil fired power plants

For MRI Research Associates, Navigant compared the power generating efficiency of fossil fired power plants across different geographies. Navigant updated the periodic annual report "International comparison of fossil power efficiency and CO2-intensity" with data for the year 2016 from the IEA Energy Balances (2018 edition).

The resulting report presents three analyses:

  • Generating efficiency and associated benchmark indicators for gas-, oil- and coal-fired power plants and total fossil-fired power generation
  • CO2 emissions intensity per fossil fuel source (coal, oil, gas) and for total fossil power generation, as well as the corresponding COreduction potential;
  • Share of renewables and nuclear in public power production

The Navigant experts analysed the following countries/regions: Australia, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Norway combined), South Korea, the United Kingdom together with Ireland, and the United States.
