Since the first plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) started reaching the public in 2010, a number of well publicized failures, of both automakers and battery suppliers, have occurred. Each of these failures had particular reasons, but, in several cases, over-hyped expectations were a contributing factor. This does not mean that the market is finished with business failures or canceled vehicle programs. Rather it indicates that these will be increasingly rare and more related to problems with specific individual business strategies rather than endemic problems in the EV market overall.

Click here to read the full article.

Navigant to Sponsor the 2013 Northeast Energy Efficiency Summit

Navigant is a proud sponsor of the 2013 Northeast Energy Efficiency Summit in Springfield, MA on June 18-19, 2013.
This conference was developed in response to popular demand to explore the rising opportunities for coal exports out of the West Coast, we will uncover the key issues affecting trade between North America’s producers and Asia’s buyers.

The phenomenon of coal-to-gas switching

Gordon Pickering, speaker

Long term average displacement of coal-fired by gas-fired generation expected to be about 4-to-5 Bcfd

One of the drivers behind coal-to-gas switching is the relative cost of natural gas vs. coal on natural gas abundance in North America

The impact of ‘old’ coal generation facility retirements is also key to the dramatic switch from coal-to-gas in the electric generation sector

Sacramento, CA – June 10, 2013 – Navigant (NYSE: NCI) has issued its North American Natural Gas Market Outlook (Outlook), Spring 2013, including updated forecast data on natural gas prices, dry conventional gas and shale gas production, natural gas demand, and gas storage activity.

According to the updated forecast, the real Henry Hub average price will increase at an average rate of 2.9 percent, from $3.66/MMBtu in 2013, to $4.07/MMbtu by 2015, and reach $6.82/MMBtu by 2035.

Navigant’s analysis found:

U.S. natural gas demand will grow from 71.2 Bcfd in 2013 to 89.0 Bcfd by 2035, driven primarily by industrial growth in the near term, and electric generation growth over the longer term.

The U.S. shale production outlook continues to be strong, growing from 28 Bcfd in 2013 to 56 Bcfd by 2035. In 2035, shale production is expected to represent 61 percent of total U.S. natural gas production.

LNG exports are expected to grow in the U.S. and Canada, reaching 6.8 Bcfd by 2020.

”High rates of supply growth are still evident in the market, which is somewhat surprising considering the relative flat growth in recent baseload demand,” says Gordon Pickering, a director with Navigant’s Energy Practice and author of the Outlook. “Given this market, and relatively low prices, we expect a near-term resurgence in demand led by the industrial sector, with additional growth extending for the full term of the forecast.”

According to the Outlook, the market will see an increase in industrial consumption of approximately 4.0 Bcfd over the next four to five years, as well as more moderate demand growth in other sectors over the full term of the forecast. In the near term, low natural gas prices will continue to increase coal-to-gas switching in the electric generation sector. In the mid-term, LNG exports will begin to come online as supported by the Department of Energy’s recent second approval of a non-Free Trade export application: Order #3282 Granting Long Term Authorization to Export from the Freeport LNG facility on Quintana Island, Texas. Over the long-term, gas demand will primarily be driven by increases in electric generation influenced by stable prices and energy policies that favors natural gas. Overall, the Outlook projects demand increases and steady supply growth that will help to keep prices stable for the duration of the forecast, providing for a healthier and less volatile natural gas market than in years past.

“I recently ran into two curious opinions regarding asset management that created a great deal of frustration. In one case, a top utility executive bluntly stated, “We will never implement an asset management strategy; it doesn’t work.” In another case, I saw the assertion, published online by a reputable industry magazine, that asset management can be proven to deteriorate distribution reliability. So, my response is to ask if those individuals would really choose not to manage assets. Isn’t that what they are saying? What would the alternative be?”

The energy sector continues to be impacted by the expansion of new drilling technologies, resulting in discovery of new energy sources, declining commodity prices, and regulatory uncertainties. The shift of the U.S. becoming energy self-sufficient is underway as U.S. gas production continues to increase due to the discovery of new shale gas reserves and improved drilling technologies. This report offers insight into the current trends in shale gas in the “Industry Perspectives” section, with an excerpt from the April 2013 issue of Financier Worldwide featuring Raoul Nowitz. Expanding upon an emerging theme presenting in the last Quarterly Dialogue, the shift from coal to natural gas fired power generation has slowed, primarily due to the recent increase in natural gas prices. In spite of the recent increase, natural gas prices still remain at historical lows.

Overall, the industry experienced a slowdown in the first quarter as M&A activity markedly decreased both in terms of transaction size and volume, and leveraged loan volumes remained stagnant, while load default rates remain at their lowest levels since the first quarter 2009.

The report serves as a reminder of the risks associated with shale oil and gas exploration, and highlights the opportunities to mitigate risk and address the challenges of the rapidly expanding market.

Highlights include:

A dramatic increase in the number of unconventional oil and gas litigation cases filed in the U.S in the second half of 2012.

The Q3 2012 spike in the volume of cases was driven by an elevated number of cases filed in Texas, Oklahoma, and Nebraska.

Royalty and land and lease rights disputes were the most common types of unconventional oil and gas litigation during 2012, with both experiencing a notable increase during the second half of 2012.

The WPA was established in 1999 to educate, engage, and enable critical stakeholders to make informed decisions about how wind energy contributes to the U.S. electricity supply.

The evaluation combined an impact and process evaluation to achieve key objectives. The impact evaluation assessed the following three key outcomes achieved by WPA’s state-based activities:

How many MW of the wind capacity added from 1999-2011 were influenced by those efforts.

The degree to which wind working groups were able to leverage other organizations’ funds to support their DOE-provided budgets.

The degree to which partner and third-party organizations have replicated WPA activities and outputs.

The process evaluation sought to provide greater understanding of the particular processes that proved most effective in achieving those outcomes. These findings were analyzed in the context of overall progress toward the DOE’s three measurable wind deployment objectives listed above.

He examines the workings of the natural gas industry, from how the unintended consequences of price regulation were finally alleviated by decontrol of wellhead prices and the unbundling of the gas transportation and commodity businesses, to how today's gas abundance affects the pipeline and storage industry's basic economic models. Some would even say that despite the continuous change in the natural gas industry, it's an increasingly healthy, vibrant and growing energy market sector.

Electric service reliability is increasingly important for operation of modern society. System reliability is regulated by State and Federal Regulatory authorities, and is carefully measured using traditional reliability indices such as SAIFI, SAIDI, CAIFI. However, the actual monetary benefit of improving reliability is more difficult to estimate and is often not required by regulatory authorities. Yet, It is increasingly important to understand the value of investment in improving reliability, especially in the face of major events, which have made recent headlines in scale and scope. What is the right level of investment in reliability?

Navigant to present at the 15th Annual Electric Power Conference & Expo

Navigant Director, Gordon Pickering will present insights on LNG exports and North American natural gas at the 15th Annual Electric Power Conference and Exhibition.

Tuesday, May 14

Track 9: Power Industry Trends and Strategies to Respond
This track will address emerging issues, novel technology solutions and means to value existing assets.
The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) has observed that each step of classic asset management methodologies seem to lead to a need for increased and improved data management, data mining, performance analysis, work prioritization or data process automation tools. This need, combined with the evolution of more data streams scattered in various systems , the growing demand for real-time analysis and more thorough forecasting makes a next step inevitable.

Investment support schemes can take the form of cash grants, loan guarantees, accelerated depreciation of assets, tax breaks, low interest loans, credits or deductions. Operating support schemes include the Feed-in Tariff, Feed-in Premiums, green certificates, and tendering.

To read the paper presented at EWEA 2013 on this topic, click here.

Poster: Update of Chinese Wind Power Market and Players
Feng Zhao, presenter

China became the largest wind power market in 2009 as measured by new installations and it represented 42% of the global total in 2011. It is significant that seven Chinese companies are among the Top 15 largest turbine suppliers in the world. During 2011, five Chinese companies exported 140 wind turbines to five different foreign markets.

However, the market conditions for wind power in China have changed dramatically since 2011. Local transmission build-out can't keep up with wind farm installations, and fierce price competition due to overcapacity has translated into lower volumes and lower margins. In addition, the central government's stricter project approval process signaled tougher market conditions for local players. 2012 will prove to be a difficult year for Chinese turbine OEMs, as evidenced by the poor performance of stocks in the 1st half of the year. It is expected that 2012 will see Chinese wind installations dropping further. This presentation will provide an update of the market dynamics and will inform attendees what is exactly going on in China. In addition, it will provide a closer look at Chinese OEM's business strategies in the North America, and their impact on both local and global markets.

Wednesday, May 8, 2013
3:00-6:00pm

Workshop: U.S. Offshore Wind Market and Supply Chain
To RSVP: click here

Bruce Hamilton, presenter
Andy Wickless, presenter

Description: In this workshop the Navigant Consortium will present preliminary results of two major offshore wind studies being performed for the U.S. Department of Energy: the Offshore Wind Annual Market Assessment and a report on U.S. Offshore Wind Supply Chain and Manufacturing. But, DR can do more than help meet peak load, it can help provide ancillary services such as contingency reserves and regulation and load following.

Potential Role of Demand Response Resources in Maintaining Grid Stability and Integrating Variable Renewable Energy

Presenter: Stuart Schare

Presenter: Bruce Perlstein, PhD

DR resources have typically been used to reduce peak demand and reduce load when wholesale electricity prices are unusually high. However, more and more attention is now being paid to the possibility that certain types of DR resources could also play a role in integrating growing amounts of variable renewable energy into the electricity grids of jurisdictions that are trying to obtain more power from “green” resources. Although those types of DR resources might be able to play that role by providing ancillary service, there is a significant uncertainty about the extent to which DR resources can be used to meet growing renewable energy integration needs and whether the DR programs should be adapted to meet those needs. This presentation will share case studies and lessons learned from findings on the California utilities/regulators study and DR and Renewables Integration as well as a case study on findings-to-date from Hawaiian Electric Company (HECO)’s pilot. The primary objectives of this presentation are to:

Identify and evaluate the potential ability of the existing and planned DR resources

Identify changes that would improve the ability of existing DR programs to meet the future renewable integration needs

Evaluate and compare the ways jurisdictions are using or plan to use DR resources in maintaining grid stability and/or integrating variable

Renewable energy
