The U.S. Natural Gas Market is About to Get Complicated

Published in Natural Gas & Electricity

By Richard Smead

In his recurring column in Natural Gas & Electricity, Navigant’s Rick Smead addresses the series of late-June articles in the New York Times questioning U.S. shale gas abundance, and how the articles were symptomatic of just how bipolar some of the debate around natural gas can get.

According to Mr. Smead, “The same guys who had long been bemoaning the rapid pace of development suddenly appeared to think we could not develop fast enough. The same guys who were appalled when natural gas prices went to double digits accused the industry of an “Enron-style” ponzi scheme for selling gas at prices that might be too low for sustained development.”

The article provides readers with a clear look at the current state of the natural gas market and related good news.
