Insights on Smart Grid Interoperability Standards
Monday, August 1, 2011
For today’s utilities, interoperability is a key capability as utilities invest in projects designed to “build out” the smart grid. For this reason, smart grid interoperability—and interoperability standards—have received increasing attention over the past decade.
At stake is the potential for a more reliable and stable supply of electricity, increased integration of renewable resources, increased efficiency, and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. The level of interoperability achieved by the smart grid will directly enable the level of functionality and commensurate benefits that can be delivered. Successful outcomes from interoperability standards development will help to accelerate technology adoption by decreasing costs, reducing investment risk, and encouraging innovation. But, without the appropriate interoperability and standards adoption, we are likely to see less successful outcomes that will dampen investment, restrict synergies, and cause more expensive upgrades and redesigns.
Navigant’s Erik Gilbert discusses smart grid interoperability—the seamless, end-to-end connectivity of our energy delivery system – that will transform our energy grid.
