10 Years of Corruption in the BRIC Nations: What Will the Next Decade Hold?

By Ellen Zimiles

November 30, 2011 marked the 10-year anniversary of the term “BRICs” used to denote the four main emerging markets: Brazil, Russia, India and China. Ten years later, analysts predict that throughout the next decade, the four BRIC economies will be responsible for almost 50 per cent of the increase in global GDP. This growth will be fueled by Brazil’s strong consumer market and government-funded infrastructure projects as it ramps up for the World Cup and the Olympics, Russia’s anticipated accession to the WTO, Indian corporations with access to cash seeking expansion opportunities and China’s hunger for natural resources.

To commemorate the anniversary, Ellen Zimiles, Managing Director and Head of Global Investigations and Compliance, appeared on CNBC to discuss the BRIC countries’ efforts to tackle anti-corruption.  Ellen told CNBC, “All four...have all increased their anti-corruption efforts.  Having said that, they’re not all in the same place....they have all gotten better, but there is a long way to go.”
