“Hope Is Not an Effective Risk Mitigation Technique”

Risk Identification, Analysis and Mitigation Techniques

By James Zack

The Navigant Construction Forum™ has expanded upon the research begun in the December 2011 SmartMarket Report prepared by McGraw Hill Construction, which Navigant co-sponsored and participated in developing.  This groundbreaking report Mitigation of Risk in Construction: Strategies for Reducing Risk and Maximizing Profitability was based on interviews with owners, architects/engineers, construction managers and contractors concerning their risk mitigation strategies.  While the report did query the participants on the level of risk mitigation employed, the 2011 report did not delve into the techniques most frequently used.  This additional research conducted by Brian Fox and James Zack of the Navigant Construction Forum™ includes surveying the senior consultants of Navigant’s Global Construction Practice who are frequently engaged on behalf of clients to perform risk identification, analysis and mitigation on major projects globally.  This research report presents the findings from this survey.
