Health System Strategy

Healthcare organizations today are confronted by unprecedented market turmoil, rapid and unpredictable change and increased financial stress. Well-designed and effectively executed strategies can create sustainable competitive advantage, provide clarity and discipline to decision-making, and generate significant financial and community service benefits. But we also know that to achieve positive results and drive real value, the planning process must be completed in a timely manner, it must be inclusive, and it must be tightly integrated with the organization’s financial management, capital deployment, and operational realities.

Services

The following features characterize—and we believe differentiate—our approach:

Commitment to implementation. What separates successful strategic plans from the rest is, ultimately, implementation and execution. At Navigant we understand this and demonstrate our commitment to implementation through our unique quarterly progress assessment (or Q-PASSsm) process. As part of our process, we meet with you once every quarter for two years after delivery of the plan to review progress in implementing the strategy, suggest appropriate adjustments to the plan, and discuss new and emerging trends, issues, and opportunities that may impact your strategic direction. In addition, Navigant has developed a proprietary tool to help providers track their progress in implementing the plan. This ACCESS-based tool, STARTsm, (Strategic Tactics Analysis Reporting Tool) is a database that allows you to manage and track the progress of the strategic initiatives and update the plan on a real time basis.

Alignment and integration of strategy with operations and finance. Great strategy is really only great if you can make it work operationally, if you can afford it, and if it helps improve your long-term viability.  We are the only healthcare consulting firm that has the depth of experience, skills, and resources to ensure your strategy is not only innovative, but operationally achievable and financially feasible and beneficial. And given the emerging realities of increased pressure on revenue stemming from the recently passed Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the ability to align and integrate strategy with operations and finance will be critically important to your future success.

National perspective and local market knowledge. The pace of change in healthcare today is rapid and accelerating.  For many health systems, keeping up with the national, regional, and local changes while managing the organization on a day-to-day basis can be a daunting task. As a result, partnering with a consulting firm that has a clear understanding of national and regional trends is critical in developing an effective strategic plan. However, it is also imperative for that firm to understand the local marketplace and recognize the unique characteristics and dynamics of your market. Having worked with providers across the United States, Navigant has this dual perspective and we will bring a balanced combination of national experience and sensitivity to local considerations.

Clinical perspective. One of the key strategic concerns facing virtually every healthcare organization today is the nature of their relationship with physicians. Our point of view is that it is exceedingly helpful to have a clinical perspective on these issues and we have access to physician executives within our practice to supplement our team and provide this perspective. We often find that it is very useful to have access to the physician point of view as part of the team to help address physician concerns and the physicians at our clients typically find this of value as well.

CASE STUDY:

Integrated Delivery System
Navigant assisted in an integrated delivery system with four acute care hospitals, a home health agency, numerous long-term care facilities, a high-performing IPA, and an extensive network of ambulatory sites develop a strategic plan for all of its divisions and operating entities.  A key aspect of this project was the development of a “future state vision” that served as rallying point and touchstone for this highly matrixed, complex provider.  This organization was subsequently named as one of the country’s Top 100 Integrated Delivery Systems.
