Biomass and Biofuels
The production of power and fuels from biomass sources is an important step towards achieving greater energy independence. The viability of using specific types of biomass, such as wood waste, agricultural waste, dedicated energy crops, or algae for power and/or fuel production largely depends on:
- The ability to procure a sustainable feedstock within close proximity to the power plants and refineries
- The prices of competing electricity and fuel prices in the local market
- The process efficiencies of the various conversion technologies being considered, such as direct combustion, anaerobic digestion, pyrolysis, biochemical conversion and physicochemical conversion
